Abstract

This study aimed to determine the level of self-interest of ninth-grade students at SMP Ta’mirul Islam Surakarta toward mathematics learning. In this study, self-interest refers to students’ internal interest in mathematics learning, which is distinct from motivation and self-regulated learning and is measured through the Four-Phase Model of Interest Development. This study employed a quantitative approach using a descriptive method. The subjects were 35 ninth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using an eight-item Likert-scale questionnaire, which was tested using the Product Moment Pearson validity test and the Cronbach’s Alpha reliability test. Scores were categorized as high, moderate, or low based on the sample mean and standard deviation (mean ± 1 SD). All items were valid because the rcount values were higher than the rtable value of 0.334, and the Cronbach’s Alpha value was 0.612. The mean score was 42.6571, with a minimum of 35.00, a maximum of 50.00, and a standard deviation of 3.32498. These results place students’ self-interest in the moderate category, with relatively homogeneous scores. Among the four phases, emerging individual interest had the highest percentage and triggered situational interest the lowest. Because the sample was purposive, the findings describe the sampled students and cannot be generalized to all ninth-grade students.
